New Template
The New Template page walks you through creating a WhatsApp message template and submitting it to Meta for approval.
Step-by-step guide
1. Choose a category
Select the template category that matches your use case:
- Marketing — for promotional messages and offers.
- Utility — for transactional and informational messages.
- Authentication — for verification codes and OTPs.
The category affects how Meta reviews the template and how conversations are billed.
2. Enter template name
Give your template a descriptive name. Template names can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores. Choose something meaningful so you can easily identify it later.
3. Select language
Pick the language for this template. You can create the same template in multiple languages by submitting separate templates with different language selections.
4. Compose the header (optional)
The header appears at the top of your message. You can choose one of the following:
- Text — a short text headline.
- Image — an image displayed above the message body.
- Video — a video attachment.
- Document — a PDF or other document file.
5. Write the body
The body is the main content of your message. You can include dynamic variables using
the double-brace syntax: {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}}, and so on. Each variable will be
replaced with actual values when the template is sent — for example, a customer name
or order number.
6. Add a footer (optional)
The footer is a short line of text displayed below the body in a lighter style. It is commonly used for disclaimers or unsubscribe notes.
7. Add buttons (optional)
You can attach up to two types of buttons:
- Call-to-action — opens a URL or dials a phone number when tapped.
- Quick reply — provides predefined response options the recipient can tap.
8. Submit for approval
Review your template and submit it. Meta will review the content and either approve or reject it. You can track the approval status on the WhatsApp Templates page.
